Beach Defense Sunscreen Spray SPF 70
A chemical-filter aerosol — avobenzone 3%, homosalate 15%, octisalate 5%, octocrylene 10% — with added fragrance, denatured alcohol and an isobutane propellant. This product line was part of J&J’s July 2021 all-lots benzene recall of five Neutrogena and Aveeno aerosol sunscreens; cans sold today postdate that recall. Inexpensive and effective against sunburn, but it carries the most documented history in this set.
2021 all-lots benzene recall (product line)
On July 14, 2021, Johnson & Johnson voluntarily recalled all lots of five Neutrogena and Aveeno aerosol sunscreen lines — including Neutrogena Beach Defense aerosol — after internal testing found low levels of benzene, a human carcinogen, in some samples. The recall applied to product on the market at that time, and Beach Defense spray has since returned to shelves. FDA’s recall notice remains the public record.
